The Montford del Rosario School of Architecture and Design, Assumption University (AAU), was established in 1997. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the AAU organizes various academic, recreational, and other special activities. The News 03 is the third issue of the newsletter published and distributed by the AAU to disseminate the results of events held between January and February.

‘Building Craft’ has gathered and presented stories about craftsmanship and handcraft that appear in architectural design. Through knowledgeable information and 5 interesting projects, this issue brings together articles to convey architectural works and material usages. That can help reflect varying elements of crafts in architectural design, with meanings that go beyond the use of human labor instead of tools, encompassing the value of human wisdom, inherited craftsmanship, and artisanal skills, all the way to the consideration of both old and new contexts surrounding a work.

The story of Jai Baan Studio is featured in this issue’s ASA Professional. This Chiang Mai-based architectural practice, whose work philosophy focuses primarily on the participatory approach, engages different parties and sectors in their creation of architecture as societal changes are pursued and achieved through the design of urban spaces and architecture.

With a shortened construction period and the ability to transform robust and heavy structures into buildings that are relatively lighter and airier, with more open spaces and layouts, steel production has created infinite possibilities in architectural design. The introduction of steel has led to the construction of skyscrapers in cities and metropolitan areas across the globe. Today, the growth of steel continues with more inventive production that generates materials with more specialized properties for the construction of buildings with even more unique and complex components.

The September-October 2022 issue of the ASA Journal, themed “Metal Attraction,” features stories on four different works of architecture of varying programs and scales, all of which incorporate steel as a primary element of the design. Steel is used to achieve the works’ distinctive styles and characteristics, each with its own interesting concept, conditions, and aesthetics.

“How will the workspace, the workplace, or the working environment change after wave after wave of the COVID-19 pandemic?”

With the pandemic in the past several years, some may have already forgotten the feeling of returning to work in the workplace, either in an office or a factory. Others may only step in once. The prevailing style of segregation/working in private spaces might come to an end soon. The territories and the assimilation between the two areas have turned into an issue that leads to the experimentation to develop the workspace, environment, and products. Based on a dynamic and flexible hybrid space integration approach, the solution is what the future might bring.
